Log 1 (9/28-10/2)

As of the week of 9/28-10/2, I have completed and posted my Alternate Solutions, Selection/Rejection/Intention and Specifications Grid on the blog. My next issue of concern is the model which will be due at the end of the month of October. Me and my associate, AM, have discussed materials for our final design in areas such as impermeable vs. permeable surfaces on the marina. This weekend we will start picking up supplies for the model.

  1. Mike,

The proposed crane and fuel dock while providing a solution to an environmental problem present some financial issues that the business owner is not going to able to overcome. The ramp at the marina is without question the busiest in the state and the same may hold true for the fuel dock.

The use of a crane will create staffing issues and increase wait time for boat owners looking to launch and retrieve there vessel. An alternative would be to minimize the amount of runoff that enters the bay by way of the ramp. This could be accomplished by installing a permeable material in the area before the ramp.

Most boaters are nervous when approaching a fuel dock or slip and if they have to pull into a slip this will add to their nervousness. This will result in boaters going to another marina to fuel. You may want to consider a more open design and possibly the use of a bubble curtain to contain spills.

You may want to consider installing a slipside pumpout facility at the marina. This will give all boats in the marina access to a pumpout facility without having to leave the slip. One pump will serve sveral docks and along the dock there would be stanchions placed every 4 or so slips.

Due to the proximity of NYC and the design of the marina marine debris collects in the corners. A device that can be placed in the corner and collect the debris would be a great addition.

Did you consider aeration devices to increase dissolved oxygen in the summer? Could use solar cell to power them.

Sorry for getting this to you so late.
